Beyond Compare is the established all-rounder, and for many people the right choice. This
page says where it is ahead, where Diffoniq is, and how we measured — so you can
decide for your own work.

Speed: one large text file
A 100 MB log file with changes scattered through it, compared in each program’s
window, timed from start to the finished result:
Program
Time
Diffoniq 2.0
1.9 seconds
Araxis Merge
5.6 seconds
Beyond Compare
18.4 seconds
Diffoniq was faster than Beyond Compare, Araxis Merge and WinMerge in every test of the
measurement series described below. On ordinary text files Araxis Merge was the fastest of the other
programs, which is why it is on this page.
Some inputs make line-based comparison very slow. With large blocks of lines moved
against each other, Beyond Compare needed 19 minutes and Araxis Merge 48 minutes;
Diffoniq finished in 1.8 seconds.
For whole folder trees, Diffoniq is quick, but we make no speed claim there: on a
first comparison the disk sets the pace for every program. What does change things is
the second time — Diffoniq keeps a content-hash cache, so comparing the same large
tree again finishes in a fraction of the first run’s time. And the folder tree is
ready to browse while Diffoniq is still comparing file contents.
Where Beyond Compare is ahead
Three-way merge of files and folders (Beyond Compare Pro). Diffoniq merges two ways.
Syntax highlighting for source code. Diffoniq colours differences, not syntax.
More specialised viewers: hex, picture comparison with pixel tolerance, tables
(CSV, Excel), media tags, Windows registry (Pro).
Writing into archives. Beyond Compare can modify archive contents; Diffoniq reads
archives and does not change them.
Remote sources: FTP in Standard; SFTP, WebDAV, Dropbox, OneDrive and Amazon S3 in
Pro. Diffoniq works with local folders, network shares (UNC) and mapped drives; remote
storage needs to be mounted as a drive first, e.g. with WinSCP or rclone.
macOS and Linux. Diffoniq runs on Windows only.
Patch files. Beyond Compare opens Unix patch files and writes patch-style reports;
Diffoniq does neither.
Where Diffoniq is strong
Archives are just folders. ZIP, 7-Zip, RAR, tar (also compressed), CAB and ISO
open like a directory and compare like one — including an archive inside an archive,
to any depth, against a folder or against another archive.
Large text files, see the measurements above. Diffoniq compares text files and
archives larger than 2 GB.
Renamed and moved files show up as one pair, also across folders, instead of one
deletion plus one addition.
Binary files are compared in one pass and summarised: size, content hash and the
offset of the first difference — the answer to “truncated download or a
different file?”.
Reports as self-contained HTML, plain text or JSON, from the window or the command
line. Items whose contents were not checked are never reported as identical.
A diff viewer for other programs: started with two paths it opens the comparison
straight away — for git difftool, TortoiseGit/SVN, Total Commander or WinSCP. Folder
sync from the comparison on screen or headless with /sync.
Which one should you pick?
Beyond Compare if you need three-way merge, work on macOS or Linux, compare
pictures, tables or the registry, or want to change files inside archives.
Diffoniq if your work is folders, archives and large text files on Windows —
checking what is inside a delivery, a backup or a build output — and you want a
tool that stays fast when the files get big.
Dates: 25–28 August 2026, one PC: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, 32 GB RAM, Windows 11.
Versions: Diffoniq 2.0.0 pre-release build; Beyond Compare 5.2.4 (build 32425);
Araxis Merge 26.0; WinMerge 2.16.58. The released Diffoniq 2.0.0 was re-checked on
5 October 2026: text comparison time unchanged within measurement noise.
Beyond Compare 5.2.6 (24 September 2026) has not been measured.
Text file timing: each program already open, file in the operating system’s cache,
timed from a screen recording, median of three runs.
Moved-blocks case: timed through each program’s command-line or automation
interface; one run each for Beyond Compare and Araxis Merge because of their duration.
Your own hardware and files will give different absolute times.
